Small Business :: Select and retain your very best people
“There is no contest between the company that buys the grudging compliance of its work force and the company that enjoys the enterprising participation of its employees”--
Ricardo Sempler
It may sound odd to ask if your business team is getting results or measuring time, but we often focus on measuring time instead of measuring your people's results.
A great place to start
- Attract the right people to your business by implementing an intentional, ongoing hiring strategy.
- Create a positive work environment that removes obstacles and opens the doors so that everyone to be successful in their job.
- Retain your best people based on the customer-focused results they achieve.
- Build a process that gives your people the opportunity to set and achieve their goals.

Good Staff Are Everywhere

Here’s the reality: The people side of the business is “every side” of the business. Without people there is no business.
Every business transaction, every business process, every customer interaction, every sale that is made, every service question that is answered, and every business result that is achieved - is accomplished by people.
What results do you want from your people?
It is your ability to get the most from the people on your team that will determine your business success. Great staff teams don’t just fall into your lap - you have to find them then develop them.
Here’s a strategy you can use to make your team great:
- Invest in them - Demonstrate to your team members that you hired them because they bring value to the organization. Even if they work an entry level position, don’t ever tell them they are just “bean counters.” Your team members provide value for the business by doing that job, so they should be included as a valuable member of the team. Help them feel valued for their contributions.
- Give them the tools they need - Provide them the necessary resources they need to do their jobs well - not just adequately. This is particularly important for your front-line team. These are the people who are out front prospecting for new business, providing solutions to customer service concerns, and are the face of the organization that people see everyday. To your prospects, customers, and business partners, these people define your business. Give them the tools they need to be successful and they will make you successful!
- Set them up for success - You priority should be to remove obstacles and create opportunities for your team to be successful. This priority is often overlooked in the course of doing business. Frequently, business leaders put so much attention on the immediate need of the moment, such as creating more sales, or generating more revenue, that little effort is made to ensure the team members can be as successful as possible. Inadvertently the business leader allows inefficient processes, lack of standardized procedures, and limited resources to become internal obstacles to their people’s ability to achieve results. You should have the energy and attention of a zealot in removing obstacles and creating opportunities for your team members to be successful.
Consider This:
Your team members have decided to join your team because they believe they will be better off with your team then the team they were part of before. Your people will invest their best energy, efforts and creativity into your goals only as long as they believe this to be true. Once this is no longer true, they will then “check-out” and begin the process of looking for a new opportunity with someone else. The best case scenario at this point is maintaining the status quo, but no business growth. The worst case scenario would be high staff turnover, poor customer service, satisfaction and retention, and a decline in your business.
You’ll find that getting great results is easier then you think. Be sure to invest in your people by helping them to get better at what they do, giving them the tools and resources they need to get their job done, and by removing obstacles and creating opportunities for your team to be successful.
